Highlight - Ice grotto

Dive into the small blue Ice grotto, which has been carved into the glacier practically every year for almost 200 years. You will experience the enormous melting and shrinking of the glacier at first hand. A Glacier nature trail takes you through a breathtaking, glacial landscape with interesting information about the formation and development of the Rhone Glacier and its ice grotto. Enjoy the sight of the Source of the Rhone with the Glacial lake, which lies in the middle of a picturesque, wild and romantic high mountain backdrop, was created with the retreat of the glacier and has grown steadily in recent years. Two viewing platforms, the Glacier and lake pulpit offer a magnificent view of a world of rock, water and ice that was still glaciated two or three decades ago and the thundering source of the Rhone.

Kneipp- and alpine garden

Admission CHF 3 (incl. towel)

Open daily

Wade barefoot through fresh glacier water, admire alpine flowers and breathe in the scent of arnica, gentian & co. Kneipp- and alpine garden is an oasis for the senses - ideal for enjoying a little time out.

The Kneipp- and Alpine Garden is probably the highest of its kind in the Alps.

Treat your feet to a soothing refreshment in the Kneipp bath with 3 pools with mountain spring water, surrounded by the Alpine garden.

Please note that due to unpredictable weather conditions in the mountains, the Kneipp pool may be closed at short notice.

The Kneipp- and Alpine garden was opened in 2016 in a festive setting opened.

Did you know that...?

  • the glacier movement at the level of the ice grotto in the tongue area used to be 30 - 40 metres per year or up to 10 cm per day. An artificial ice cave therefore had to be completely re-carved into the ice every year at great expense.
  • the ice grotto is inhabited by "glacier fleas", millimetre-sized springtails - visible to the naked eye as black moving dots on the ice.
  • a lake several football pitches in size and more than 30 metres deep has formed in the tongue area of the Rhone Glacier over the last 20 years.
